Mercedes W124: a youngtimer that does not know how to break down

The last Mercedes assembled to last a million kilometers. Why the W124 eats the freeway for breakfast and what to check before you buy it.

At +34 degrees, in the queue in front of the border crossing, while modern turbo-gasoline cars turn off the air conditioning to avoid overheating, a silver sedan stands still as if parked in a garage. The temperature needle is at 88, the air conditioner is freezing, the engine is ticking with that soft, indifferent rhythm that knows no panic. That's itMercedes W124, and that's his whole character in one scene.

It was produced from 1984 to 1997, and is the last Mercedes to be built before bookkeeping got the best of the engineers. The door closes with the sound of a safe. The chassis is oversized for everything that will ever be asked of it. And under the hood are engines that are designed to go a million kilometers on regular oil — and many do.

Why the W124 eats the highway without breaking a sweat

The secret of a long relationship is not strength, but calmness. The W124 is heavy — the sedan goes from1,360 to over 1,600 kgdepending on the engine — and that mass, coupled with a long intermediate axle and multi-link rear suspension, gives stability that newer, lighter cars don't have. At 130 km/h, the steering wheel is stationary, the side wind hardly moves it, and the cabin is so quiet that the conversation flows normally.

The heart of the story is the engines. Ordinary six-cylinder petrol enginesM104(2.8 and 3.2, with about 197-220 hp) sing up to 6,000 rpm with a silky peace that four-cylinders do not have. But the king of long distances is diesel — naturally aspiratedOM602(2.5, in-line five-cylinder) and turboOM606(3.0). They don't rush, but they don't stop: torque arrives early, consumption on the open road falls below7 l/100 km, and the mechanics are so simple that you are not afraid of it either in the Balkans or in Anatolia.

If you're looking for the character of a naturally aspirated petrol without the turbo worry, the logic is the same as its German rivals of the same era — a comparison withBMW E30 as a youngtimerit shows two philosophies: the E30 is a driving player, the W124 is a mileage marathoner. And those who sit behind the wheel all day appreciate the latter.

What cracks, what rusts and where the W124 can trick you

The reputation for indestructibility is well-deserved, but the W124 is old — the youngest example is close to 30 years old. The problems are not mechanics but what time does to everything.

Rust is the first and last judge.Early models (up to the phase-lift in 1993, the so-called Mopf 1) were better protected; the later ones received a water-based paint according to EU regulations and in some places they are rusting worse. Critical points: door sills, inner fenders, front suspension struts, hood and trunk edges, and the floor under the carpet. A magnet and a flashlight are more important to you than a test drive.

Watch out for the M104 gasoline enginemotor cable installation with biodegradable insulation(1992-1995 models) — insulation breaks down, wires short out, and motor loses power. Replacing the manhole costs money, but it is a one-time thing. Everything is simpler with diesel, but checkoil leakage from head gasket and vacuum pump— diesel W124 locks the doors and shuts down the engine with vacuum, so bad vacuum means a series of little mysteries.

It was produced from 1984 to 1997, and is the last Mercedes to be built before bookkeeping got the best of the engineers.

The 4G-Tronic automatic transmission is durable if the oil is changed; hard shifting shocks mean neglected working fluid. Air conditioning on old systems requires attention — we wrote about it in detail into the text about the air conditioner and the refrigerator before the trip, because W124 at +35 without air conditioning quickly becomes a punishment.

EngineStrengthconsumption (highway)A weak point
OM602 2.5 D90-94 HP6.5 l/100 kmoil leak, slow
OM606 3.0 TD143 HP7.5 l/100 kmvacuum pump, turbo
M104 2.8197 hp10-11 l/100 kmcable installation
M104 3.2220 hp11-12 l/100 kmcable, head

Prices are still reasonable, but rising. Solid diesel sedan with documentation starting from3,500 to 6,000 euros; preserved M104 or rare wagon (S124) and coupe (C124) wanted7,000-15,000 euros. Badly restored "pearls" with broken rust sell for under 2,000 — and that's where the most money is lost.

Estate, sedan or coupe — which W124 is yours

The sedan (W124) is a classic and the easiest to get parts for. The Caravan (S124) is for those who want to combine a youngtimer with a real vacation — we wrote about how smart it is to choose a family car ina guide to caravans for the sea, and the S124 is one of the most serious candidates: the self-leveling rear suspension keeps it level regardless of the load. The C124 coupe and A124 convertible are the most expensive and collectible, but for the long haul they are a luxury, not a tool.

Hidden Gems — what only someone who drives it knows

The first thing older W124 drivers do before a trip: changefuel filter and look at the rubbers on the diesel jets— it's 30 euros that prevents you from stopping in the backcountry. Second: get itoriginal W124 rubber floor matsbecause they hide the condition of the floor, so always check for moisture under them — wet carpet means clogged drains from the windshield ducts, a classic that quietly creates rust.

Few people know that the seat heater on older models is a common failure, but it can be solved by cheaply replacing the carbon mesh instead of an expensive complete seat. And more: originalBecker radio codeask the dealer — without it, the first battery change locks the audio system.

For parts, the network of clubs in the Balkans is gold — used bodywork and interiors are easier to find than for many newer cars, and there are specialist craftsmen for old Mercedes in almost every major city. The maintenance philosophy is similar to what we described inPorsche 944: you buy the service history, not just the car.

Questions & answers

short and to the point
How many kilometers can the Mercedes W124 cover?
Diesel engines OM602 and OM606, with a regular oil change every 10,000 km, regularly exceed 500,000 km, and many examples record over a million. The engine isn't the problem — the rust and the electrics are.
What is the most reliable engine in the W124?
The atmospheric diesel OM602 (2.5) is the simplest and most durable, and the turbodiesel OM606 (3.0) is the best for fast long distances with a consumption of about 7.5 l/100 km. The petrol engine M104 is silky smooth, but requires attention on the cable installation.
How much is a W124 in good condition?
A solid diesel sedan with a service book goes from 3,500 to 6,000 euros, while a preserved M104, wagon S124 or coupe C124 ask for 7,000-15,000 euros. Badly restored examples under 2,000 euros are the most expensive mistake.
