The Porsche 944 as a Youngtimer: What Breaks and What It Costs

A transaxle, 50/50 weight balance, and an engine that will destroy itself the moment you skip one belt change. A buyer's guide to the 944 without the regret.

The sound is the first thing that fools you. Snap the throttle open in second gear, that gruff, faintly tractor-like four-cylinder wakes up, and you think you've bought a sports car. Then you enter one honest corner and realize you didn't buy an engine — you bought a chassis. The Porsche 944 is one of the rare cars from the eighties where the steering wheel tells the truth, and a weight distribution close to 50:50 does a job that plump crossovers still can't manage three decades later.

But the 944 is also a machine that punishes ignorance brutally and expensively. This isn't an MX-5, where a bad purchase costs you a weekend's worth of nerves. Porsche literally sliced the base 2.5-litre four-cylinder (M44) from the 928's V8 and added two balance shafts under Mitsubishi license to calm the vibrations that usually come with large fours.

Power isn't abundant, and you need to accept that before buying. Early 2.5s put out around 163 hp and 205 Nm at 3,000 rpm. The later 3.0 S2 climbs to 211 hp and 280 Nm, and the Turbo (internally 951) ranges from 220 to 250 hp. But the 944 isn't driven by numbers, it's driven by balance — the same principle we praised in the Mazda MX-5, only heavier, faster, and far more costly when things go wrong.

First and most important: the timing belt and balance-shaft belts. This is an interference engine — when the belt snaps, the valves and pistons meet, and the engine is finished. The service interval is every 60,000 km or a maximum of 4–5 years, no exceptions, regardless of mileage. If the seller can't produce a receipt, assume the job is still ahead of you. The water pump and tensioners must be replaced along with the belt.

Second: the clutch with its rubber center damper. When the rubber fails, you'll hear a knock on start-up and shutdown — replacement is costly because the entire torque tube has to come out. Third: worn torque tube bearings produce a droning noise at low speeds. Fourth: a cracked dashboard is almost the rule on cars that sat in the sun — a new one is rare and expensive. Fifth: rust on the sills, under the battery, around the rear hatch, and near the windshield. The chassis is galvanized, but 40 years and poor repairs take their toll.

On top of that: leaking roofs (targa and sunroof models), tired front suspension bushings that kill that famous steering feel, and electrics that love to test your patience. A test drive without putting the car on a lift is throwing your money away.

Our practical advice: the S2 is the sweet spot — the most naturally-aspirated power, the stiffest monocoque, and mechanics that have already been sorted on the survivors that made it this far. The base 2.5 is cheaper to get into but slower; the Turbo is the most exciting and the most expensive to maintain, with added worries around the turbo and cooling. For your first years of ownership, it's better to pay more for a serviced car than to buy a cheap project — because one major service can easily eat up the price difference.

Hidden gems: what only someone who's actually driven one knows

First — an early model without ABS and with manual steering gives the purest steering feel, but braking power by modern standards isn't there; drive with your head, not your ego. Second, the famous chassis number and aluminum engine cover aren't just decoration: on S2 and Turbo versions, check whether the battery tray has been replaced, because rust starts unnoticed underneath it and ends up on the sill.

Third, look for a car with a factory service book and belt-replacement receipts — that's worth more than low mileage without paperwork. Fourth, if buying in Serbia, pay attention to the customs history and whether the car was imported as a classic; that affects both registration and insurance. Fifth, the best examples never get advertised — they're found through clubs and owner forums, where one phone call is worth more than twenty listings.
