Air conditioner and refrigerator before the trip: a service that saves your vacation
The air conditioner does not turn off in March. It screeches at +38 in the column near Karlovac, when you still have 900 km to the sea and children in the back seat.
The air conditioner does not turn off in March. It cranks at +38, in the column near Karlovac, when you still have 900 km to the sea, when the engine keeps the temperature on the edge, and the ventilation starts to blow lukewarm air that smells of the basement. Then it's too late. Then you pay for service outside working hours, in some vulcanizer shop that looks at you like a tourist — because that's what you are.
The car's cooling system actually istwo separate systemswhich people keep mixing up. One cools the engine (radiator, water pump, thermostat, antifreeze). Others cool you (compressor, condenser, freon, evaporator). They share the same space behind the hood and the same airflow through the front, but break down for different reasons and require different inspection. Both should be checked before 1,400 km per year. Here's how, and what it really costs.
Why does the air conditioner lose power without shutting down all of a sudden?
The air conditioner rarely stops overnight. Shewithers. Freon naturally leaks through the rubber seals and O-rings — the system loses approx10 to 15% filling per yearand that's normal. When it drops below two-thirds, the compressor still works, but the cooling weakens: instead of 6-8 °C at the ventilation opening, you get 14-16 °C, which you practically don't feel on the highway in the sun.
The key figure is the difference between the opening temperature and the outside temperature. A healthy air conditioner on idle, with recirculation on, should expel the air18-22 °C coolerfrom the cabin. If the difference is less than 10 °C — the system is half empty or the compressor loses pressure. Our measure from the road: when the temperature below the body is blowing from the ventilation, and it is +35 outside, the air conditioning practically does not exist.
R134a or R1234yf — know what your car drinks
Cars up to about 2014-2017. years they useR134a, cheap and available gas. Newer vehicles (mostly from 2017 onwards, mandatory after 2021) go toR1234yf— ecological, but three or four times more expensive. This is not trivial: filling R134a is 4,000-7,000 dinars, while R1234yf can cost 15,000-25,000. The type of gas is written on a sticker under the hood, usually near the lid lock or on the condenser itself. A service that fills you with the wrong gas in the wrong system causes damage that is measured in hundreds of euros.
Compressor: the expensive part that heralds the end
The compressor is the heart of the air conditioner and the most expensive component. Its end is announced — with a sound.Rattling or whining when turning on the air conditioner, belt squealing, intermittent cooling shutdown at idle. The electromagnetic clutch (compressor clutch) disengages first and can be heard as a metallic tick-tick as it engages and disengages. New compressor with installation and charging:250-600 eurosdepending on the model. That's why the system is not allowed to run empty — a compressor without enough oil (which circulates together with freon) kills itself in a few hundred kilometers.
An engine that must not boil in the column
The air conditioner puts extra strain on the engine just when it's at its worst — at a standstill, in the heat, when there's no air flow. That's why an inspection of the engine cooling system is included in the package. Firstlevel and age of antifreeze: the coolant loses its properties after 3-5 years, and the old mixture does not protect against corrosion and transmits heat less well. Check color and clarity — cloudy, reddish or oily fluid means a problem (head gasket, clogged radiator).
The car's cooling system actually is two separate systems which people keep mixing up.
Second, engine cooler from outside. Insects, poplar strands, dust and leaves accumulate behind the mask over the years — a layer that works like a blanket. The air conditioning condenser sits right in front of the engine radiator, so when the space between them is blocked, both things work worse at the same time. A low-pressure flush (never with a close-up kercer — you'll bend the fins) restores 10-15% of cooling efficiency for free.
thirdly, ventilator. The electric fan in front of the refrigerator must be turned on when the temperature exceeds approximately 92-100 °C and when the air conditioner is turned on. The test is simple: run the engine in a place with the air conditioning on and listen — if the fan never comes on and the temperature rises, the relay or the motor itself are candidates for replacement. This is covered in detail in our guideHeat, asphalt and 1400 km, and the driving technique that saves the engine on climbs is covered in the textSerpentine without fear.
The smell from the ventilation is not cosmetics
That damp, stale smell when you turn on the air conditioner isn't harmless — it's bacteria and moldvaporizer, which is constantly wet and dark. The solution is twofold: replacementcabin (pollen) filterevery 15,000-20,000 km or once a year, and disinfection of the evaporator (foam or ultrasonic treatment, 2,000-4,000 dinars). The trick we use: in the last 2-3 minutes of driving, turn off the compressor and leave the fan on — the evaporator dries out and mold has nowhere to grow.
Hidden gems: little things that the service skips
First:expansion valve and dryer. When the system opens due to a malfunction, a good craftsman always changes the dryer as well — it's a cheap part (15-30 euros) that absorbs moisture and protects the compressor. If the service "forgets" it in order to be cheaper, the moisture in the system creates ice in the expansion valve in a year and you are without air conditioning again.
Second:the leak is looked for by UV dye, not by guesswork. A quality service injects fluorescent dye into the system and after a few days of driving with a UV lamp looks for the leak. If someone just refills your gas without asking why, you pay the same refill every season.
Third, for youngtimer drivers: with older cars like those from our guidesBMW E30andPorsche 944, the original air conditioner often runs on the already discontinued R12 gas. Switching to R134a requires an oil change and sometimes a gasket — not expensive, but it has to be done by someone who knows the sequence, otherwise the compressor will get stuck. With classics, it's fair to say: sometimes it's cheaper to drive with the windows down than to chase the perfect climate.
Questions & answers
short and to the point- How much does it cost to fill the air conditioner in the car?
- Filling with R134a gas and checking the system costs 4,000-7,000 dinars. Newer cars that use R1234yf pay 15,000-25,000 dinars due to the price of the gas itself.
- How do I know if I need a Freon refill?
- If the air from the ventilation is lukewarm and the compressor is running, the system is half empty. A healthy climate gives 6-8 °C at the opening, about 18-22 °C cooler than the outside temperature.
- Why does the air conditioner smell when I turn it on?
- It's mold and bacteria on the evaporator, which is constantly wet. The solution is disinfection (2,000-4,000 din) and replacement of the cabin filter; turn off the compressor a few minutes before the end of the ride to dry the evaporator.
