BMW E30: what engine is it looking for, where does it rust and what does it cost today?

E30 is not bought by mileage, but by shock absorber domes. Engine that demands, rust that kills and realistic parts prices in 2024.

Open the trunk, remove the carpet over the spare wheel and press the sheet metal edge around the rear shock domes with your finger. If it crumbles — turn around and walk away. It doesn't matter that the engine starts from first, that the upholstery smells like the eighties and that the owner swears by regular service. The failed rear shock absorber dome turns the E30 from a youngtimer into a multi-thousand euro project.

The E30 is the most sought-after old Bavaria in the Balkans today, and for reasons that have nothing to do with nostalgia: rear-wheel drive, fair weight, mechanics you can service yourself in the backyard, and a line that Bangle has never touched. But the market is dirty — tails, painted over holes and imported wrecks from wet climes. A real copy can be recognized by three things: the engine, the sheet metal and the paperwork. In order.

Engine: The six-cylinder sings, but the diesel and M20 have gripes

Forget the legends. The best everyday E30 isn't the M3 — it is320i or 325i with M20 straight six. The M20B25 from the 325i gives approx125 kW (170 hp) and 222 Nm at 4,000 rpm, sounds like an upscale small sedan and pulls smoothly from 2,000 rpm. The sound at 3,500 rpm, when the intake manifold starts to breathe, is the only reason people still pay money for a thirty-year-old car.

But the M20 has two non-negotiable fixed points. She is the firsttiming belt — changed every 60,000 km or a maximum of four years, and if it breaks, it bends the valves because the engine is an interference type. It's the second oneoil pump nutwhich unscrews at high revolutions and destroys the crankshaft; checking that it is secured by wire is the first thing you ask the previous owner to do. The plastic neck of the radiator and the thermostat housing are also cracking with age — cheap, but indicative.

Four-cylinders are a different story.M10 (1.8, carburetor/injection)is an iron engine that runs a million kilometers and has no belt — chain. It is slower, but almost indestructible.M40 (1.6 and 1.8 SOHC)is the most problematic: the camshaft wears out because the lubrication is poor, and the toothed belt is also an interference. Buy the M40 only if the service record is impeccable.M42 (1.8 16v)iz 318is is a little gem — 100 kW, chain, aggressive, but rare on the market and expensive.

DieselM21 (324d/td)is for those who want to drive, not polish: slow, but frugal and durable, with the same belt that demands discipline. A similar philosophy of "buy a mechanic that doesn't know how to break down" has been developed in the codeMercedes W124and the codeVolvo 240— E30 is a sportier cousin of the same school.

Rust is not a flaw of the E30 — it is a test of the owner

E30 does not rust randomly. Rust where the factory skimped on protection and where water stands. If you learn the five points, you can evaluate the car in ten minutes.

Rear shock absorber domesare the verdict. Under the carpet in the trunk, where the shock absorber receives the impact of the body, the sheet metal cracks and fails. Repair requires cutting and welding reinforcement —200 to 500 euros per pagewith an honest tinsmith, and it is a job that is not hidden by paint.Jacking pointsunder the sills are another classic hole; if they are pierced, the threshold goes next.

The third point isspare wheel tray and trunk floor— roof drains (sunroof) get clogged with leaves, water leaks down the pillars and collects at the back. Open it, smell it: moisture and a wet carpet are a sign. They are fourthfront turrets and battery basketin the engine compartment, where the acid eats away at the sheet metal. Peta suthe lower edges of the doors and fenders around the rear wheels— visually obvious, but understated.

But the market is dirty — tails, painted over holes and imported wrecks from wet climes.

The same principle "you buy the body, not the engine" was followed by the codePorsche 944: with those cars, sheet metal costs more than mechanics. The E30 is cheaper to digest, but the logic is identical —the healthy shell is the only part you can't order from a catalog.

Parts 2024: mechanics cheap, sheet metal and details expensive

The good news: mechanical spare parts for the E30 are still made worldwide, from original to reproduction. The bad news: the tiny plastic and tin details specific to the model have become expensive because no one makes them anymore.

Engine maintenance E30 with M20 on a yearly basis, with regular driving, is kept below300–400 eurosif you change the oil and filters yourself. What breaks the budget is the sheet metal restoration and the hunt for original bits and pieces — chrome moldings, pre-facelift taillights, original seats with no cracks. This is where the market behaves like a stock exchange.

Hidden Gems: what only someone who has driven an E30 knows

First -look for pre-facelift (pre-1987) only if you like chrome and narrower fenders; facelift (1987+) has plastic bumpers and better anti-corrosion protection from the factory, so less rust. For everyday driving, the facelift is the smarter choice, no matter what the purists claim.

Other —differential marked "S" on the housing is LSD (self-locking), and it is a detail that changes the character of the car in a curve. Many 325i's had it from the factory; check under the car before paying a premium for a "sporty" variant that the seller can't prove.

Third — smell. A healthy E30 inside smells like dry wool and old oil.The smell of dampness and mold means that the sunroof drains are leaking and the trunk floor is probably already affected.Your nose tells you the truth before a crane.

Fourth — if you're targeting the open variant for weekend rides, we've already broken it down in a separate guide:BMW E30 convertibleit has its own additional rust spots around the roof mechanism that the sedan doesn't have.

Questions & answers

short and to the point
What is the best engine for BMW E30 youngtimer?
For everyday driving M20B25 from 325i (125 kW, 222 Nm) — a smooth six with a good sound. For worry-free reliability M10 1.8 with chain timing.
Where does the BMW E30 rust the most?
The most critical are the rear shock absorber domes under the carpet in the trunk. Then the points for the jack, the spare wheel tray, the front turrets and the battery basket.
How much does it cost to maintain a BMW E30 today?
Mechanical parts are cheap — a set of belts 40-70 EUR, annual maintenance under 300-400 EUR if you do it yourself. Repairing rust and hunting for original items is expensive.
