Weekend on Etna: crater in the morning, lava in a glass in the afternoon
One day, two heights: 2900 meters of volcanic ash until noon, then a glass of Nerella from 700 meters until sunset. This is how it comes together.
The wind at 2,900 meters carries the smell of sulfur and something that looks like burnt flint — and ash that was liquid five years ago crackles under the boots. That's the top half of this weekend. The bottom half is the cupNerello Mascaleseon the terrace of the winery four hours later, while the same peak smokes in the distance. The whole trick is to plan the day so that you don't rush.
Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe, with a peak that varies around3350 metersand changes height with each eruption. It is not approached as a picnic spot — it is approached with an hourly ticket, because both the ascent and the tasting have their own laws.
Morning: how to get to the crater without wandering
There are two entrances. Southern, withRifugio Sapienza (1900 m), has a cable carFunivia dell'Etnawhich throws you out in about fifteen minutes2500 meters; from there, off-road minibuses and a mandatory licensed guide lead to the zone around2900 meters. north entrance,Piano Provenzana (1800 m), is quieter and wilder, with 4x4 vehicles to the Observatory. For this plan, we choose the north — because afterwards we descend straight into the vineyardscontrade, without going around the whole mountain.
Leave early. The cable car and jeeps work in the morning, and in the afternoon the clouds can swallow the peak beyond recognition. You can't climb the upper zone without a guide — it's not bureaucracy, it's the bursts of steam and unforgiving unstable edges. Bring a windbreaker and closed shoes and +30 each in the valley: it's easy up there15 degrees colderand windy.
Afternoon: North slope and wine that remembers lava
You descend into the belt betweenRandazza, Passopisciara and Castiglione di Sicilia, on the eye600 to 900 meters above sea level. This is the heart of northern Etna: small plots, old vines on their own roots (many survive phylloxera due to the sandy volcanic soil), andcontradaa system that works like Burgundian — each lava ravine yields a different glass. Don't make up winery names in advance; drive through Passopisciaro, follow the signscantinaand make an appointment the day before by phone, because family cellars do not accept without notice.

He is looking for two things in the glass.Etna Biancoof the varietyCarricante— cutting acidity and a salty, smoky finish. IEtna Rossofrom Nerello Mascalese — thin ruby, tannin that stings, not suffocates. We explain why that wine stings and where its minerality comes from in the textEtna Rosso and Carricante: wine from the stinging lava, and the whole wider context of the island is in the editorialSicily for hedonists.
Serve Bianco on10–12 °C, Rosso on15–16 °C— not warmer, because the alcohol on northern Etna rarely exceeds 13.5% and the wine quickly loses its freshness in the glass. It goes with local sheep's cheese andsausagewith fennel seeds. Don't drive back immediately after the tasting; leave it for an hour and water, or sleep in oneagritourismamong the vineyards.
Why exactly in this order?
Crater in the morning, wine in the afternoon — not the other way around. The climb requires sober legs and a clear head, and the tasting is a reward that does not take you anywhere. When you sit on the terrace with a glass in your hand and look up at the top you stepped on this morning, you realize that you have met the same piece of land at two heights and in two aggregate states. That's the whole point of Etna.
Questions & answers
short and to the point- Can the Etna crater be climbed without a guide?
- You can reach about 2500 m independently (by cable car or terrain), but the upper zone above ~2900 m should only be done with a licensed guide — due to active fumaroles and unstable terrain.
- What is the best side of Etna for a combination of climbing and wineries?
- North slope: the entrance of Piano Provenzana for the ascent, then the descent to the contrade around Randazzo, Passopisciaro and Castiglione di Sicilia for the tasting of Nerello and Carricante.
- At what temperature is Etna Rosso served?
- At 15–16 °C. Nerello Mascalese is light and fresh, so it loses its finesse at room temperature; Etna Bianco from Carricante goes cooler, at 10–12 °C.
