The Kadu waterfall is hidden in a canyon above Balta Berilovac, and you don't get to it by accident — you descend on foot, the last two hundred meters on wet stone, and then you are hit by cold air that is ten degrees lower than that in the parking lot. Why is Stara planina driving slowly and that is the point
The approach goes from two directions. From the north acrossKnjazevacthrough the valley of Trgoviški Timok, from the south acrossPirotand Lake Zavoj. Both roads are narrow, winding and patched in places, and both reward a driver who knows what he's doing. The section from Pirot to Zavojski Jezera and further towards Dojkinci requires good tires and patience, because the asphalt turns into macadam at times. Zavojsko jezero was created in 1963 when a landslide blocked the Visočica valley — today it is twelve kilometers of blue water wedged between ridges, and the viewpoint above it is one of the places where you will stop your car without a plan.

Waterfalls that work even when the rivers dry up
In summer, many sources weaken, butA bathtubandStupidthey almost always have water because they feed from higher, cooler watersheds. Kadu (locals also call it Kadionica) falls about 30 meters into the canyon of the Stanjina river; the trail from the parking lot is short but steep, with chains and ropes in the most slippery places — sneakers with good soles are not a recommendation but a requirement.
Tupavica is a milder story. It is located above the villageInfants, you can walk for about 40 minutes on an easy path, and a fifteen-meter waterfall falls over a rocky threshold into a green cauldron. It is ideal for families and for a day when you don't want to fight the cliff. The Pilj waterfall on the Toplodolska river is the third trump card — a little further, but with fewer people.

When to go to avoid the heat and crowds
It can be +30 at noon in July at the Kadu parking lot, but it is significantly cooler in the canyon itself. Our measure from the road: leave the accommodation before 8 in the morning, be at the waterfall by 10, and get off before the organized tour buses arrive around noon. On weekends, Babin Zub is the busiest — on Wednesdays or Thursdays, you'll have the gondola almost to yourself.
Stone villages: where the mountain preserves memory
If there is one place that sums up the entire mountain, this is itGuest— a village above Lake Zavoj, built of stone, mud and wood, without plaster and almost without metal in the construction. The houses are crowded together on the slope, the roofs are made of stone slabs, and the whole structure has been declared a cultural monument. A walk through Gostuša is a walk through the nineteenth century, which has not been reconstructed for tourists — people still live there.
Temska, Rsovci, Topli Do and Balta Berilovac are villages where mountain life continues: rural households, trout from the river, cheese and cream that is not bought in the market. Hidden Gems: What Only Someone Who's Been Knows
The Rsovac Caves above the village of Rsovac hide fresco-paintings from the Middle Ages on the rocks — few tourists turn there, and a local will show you the way. Above Toplo Dol there is an old mill that is still grinding, and if you come at the right time the host will let you see how it works. For a vantage point without a single fence and without a single person, climb the ridge above Baba's Tooth in the late afternoon — when the sun drops at an angle, Baba's Tooth's stone spiers cast shadows hundreds of meters across Torlak. Trout from the Toplodol river, prepared on the grill in one of the households, is better than anything you will find in Pirot - ask for it in advance, because it is prepared to order.
