Luggage for a day trip, packed properly

Cooler bag that really cools, gear that fits in one chest, and groceries that don't capitulate at +35. List without hyphens.

Someone always forgets the opener. Someone brings half a fridge and drags a leaky bag all over the trunk carpet all Saturday. Between those two extremes is one crate, one cool bag, and a list that packs in twelve minutes—we checked our own stopwatch, multiple times, while the car warmed up in the sun and patience ran thin.

A one-day summer trip is not a move. The goal is for everything to fit in one layer of the trunk, for nothing to rattle around the bend, and for the food to arrive at its destination in the same condition in which it left. This is the order in which we pack.

Equipment: one chest, not five bags

Rule number one — everything uncool goes inone hard plastic crate of 40-50 liters. The crate does not drip, does not split, does not slide and serves as a table when you arrive. In it: two cloth mats or one thicker blanket-mat, folding knives, cutting board, salt in a small box, napkins and a garbage bag (always two - one gets torn).

Cooler bag is a separate world and more on that later. It goes with the crate5 liter gallon of water— not for drinking, but for washing clothes, cooling and that moment when the engine overheats on a hill. If you're going on the water, add a sand shovel, but that's a luxury, not a necessity.

For the car itself: check that the spare is in order and that you have the triangle, vest and jack in place — we have provided a detailed list of checks in the textwhat is checked the night before the trip. A day trip is not exempt from this; a flat tire on the macadam to the viewpoint can eat up the whole day.

The little things that save the day

  • Bottle opener and corkscrew— one tool that has both, and it's in a compartment, not a crate
  • Wet wipes and a dry towel- hands are not washed with water after eating watermelon
  • Charger and power bank— navigation consumes the battery, and the signal disappears on the mountain
  • SPF 30+ cream and insect repellent— both in the door compartment, not at the bottom

Foods that survive +35

Heat is the worst cook. You leave anything with mayonnaise, cream or raw chicken at home — it's the fastest way to a bad day. We choose foods that are stable in the heat for at least a couple of hours: hard cheeses, prosciutto and cured meats, hard fruits, tomatoes, cucumbers, bread and scones.

The goal is for everything to fit in one layer of the trunk, for nothing to rattle around the bend, and for the food to arrive at its destination in the same condition in which it left.

For a cold meal on the mat, there is hardly anything better than the combination that we elaborated in the textscones and cheeses from the market— everything is chopped on the spot, nothing needs to be heated. If you're planning a barbecue at your destination, the meat goes frozen in a cooler bag and thus acts as extra ice until you put it on the grill.

Water first of all. Do the mathminimum 1.5 liters of liquid per personfor a day in the sun, and when it's over +35 and two liters. Carbonated and sweet doesn't quench your thirst — plain water and, if you really have to, a beer or a bottlechilled whitefor when the car is already parked.

A cool bag that really cools

Most people go wrong here. A cooler bag isn't magic—it just slows down the heat, and only if it's properly filled. Insertat least two or three gel pads frozen overnight, both at the bottom and at the top, because cold air falls. He fills the bag to the brim; a half-empty bag heats up twice as fast because you're heating the air, not the food.

Keep it on the floor behind the seat, in the shade, never in the trunk baking in the sun — the difference can be 15-20°C. Open it as rarely as possible. With good preparation, a good bag keeps food below 8°C for a full six to eight hours, which is exactly how long a decent trip lasts.

And that's all. No excess, no three leaky bags and no half-way panic when you realize you left the opener on the kitchen table.

Questions & answers

short and to the point
How long does a cooler bag keep food cold in the heat?
With two or three frozen gel pads and a full bag, it keeps food below 8°C for about six to eight hours. A half-empty bag heats up twice as fast because it cools the air, not the food.
How much water to bring for a one-day summer trip?
Minimum 1.5 liters of liquid per person, and above +35°C count two liters. It also carries a 5-liter gallon of plain water for hand washing and cooling.
What foods should not be taken on a trip in the heat?
