The open roof on the highway is a matter of departure time, not mood. Five sections where the wind works for you and a clock that escapes both the heat and the columns.
The roof down at two o'clock in the afternoon on the Makarska Riviera is not a romance but a punishment — the asphalt returns 50 degrees upwards, there is no air conditioning, and in front of you crawls a column of campers that does not open until Ploce. An open roof on the Adriatic is primarily a question of departure time. If you start on time, the highway is yours; be late for the hour, drive in the oven behind someone else's trailer.
We've put together five sections that make sense on a pitched roof — because of the wind, the shadow of a rock or the sea on the right side — and the exact window when to take them. Five sections and when on them
1. Rijeka — Senj (Kvarner, ~65 km)
A classic entrance to the highway, the sea constantly on the right and enough directions to keep the roof down without turbulence in the cabin. Get going8 hours ago— after 9:30 a.m., columns are inserted from the Slovenian direction. Coffee break in Crikvenica, on the waterfront.
2. Senj — Karlobag (foot of Velebit, ~45 km)
The harshest and most beautiful stretch: bare rock on the left, open sea on the right. Caution — herestormit can hit over 100 km/h even in summer, and then the roof goes up without negotiation. In calm weather, drive early in the morning while the rock still casts a shadow on the road.
3. Brela — Ploče (Makarska Riviera, ~55 km)
The most photogenic, but also the most crowded part. The only honest window isbefore 7:30 a.m. or after 6 p.m. In the middle of the day, everything is standing here. The reward is Biokovo on the left and the pines that make a natural tunnel of shade in the morning.

4. Ston — Dubrovnik (~55 km)
When you pass the salt pans near Ston, the road climbs and opens up to the sea — ideal for a lowered roof as a gentle mistral blows from the open sea. 5. Herceg Novi — Kotor (Boka, ~40 km)
The bay instead of the open sea, so the air is moister and calmer — the roof stays down even at dusk. It's the best time18–20 h, when the heat subsides, and the water returns the last light. Why departure time solves everything
An open roof has no defense against two enemies: direct sun at the zenith and standing in a column without air flow. Early morning departures (until 8:00 a.m.) and evening (after 6:00 p.m.) capture the oblique angle of the sun, lower asphalt temperatures, and an emptier road. The middle of the day, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., is for the beach and the shade — not the steering wheel.
