Njeguši nad Bok: prosciutto, cheese and 25 serpentine Lovcen
The old road from Kotor to Njeguš has 25 visible serpentines and a village at the top that smells of smoke and storm. Here's how to put the steering wheel and board together.
From the twenty-fifth serpentine, when you stand on the extension above Kotor, the entire Bay of Boka-Kotor lies below you like a map in relief — and the air already smells of smoke. That is the direction of Njeguš, a village on the eye880 meters above sea level, where one of the most famous prosciutto in the Balkans is made from two ingredients, salt and wind.
The road is as much a point as the plate. The old serpentine road Kotor-Njeguši is not for those who rush — it is narrow, the wall is low, and the buses appear at the worst possible moment. But that's exactly the reason to climb it, not the tunnels. Every nook opens a new angle on the bay, and the famous ones25 windingsis a pace that makes you drive with your head, not the gas.
Why is this prosciutto being dried right here?
Njeguši sits right on the pass where two climates collide: the moist breath of the sea from the south and the dry, cold air from Lovćen. That shift — a storm that blows, then stops, then blows again — is what slowly dries the meat without mold and without haste. It's not marketing, it's a microclimate that you can't copy in a chamber. We explained how salt, smoke and wind really work in the text of Frprosciutto, salt and bora, and here you will see a live scene: smokehouses made of stone, beech wood and butt hung in semi-darkness.
Prosciutto goes well with Njeguš cheese — cow's cheese, semi-hard, often matured in oil, saltier and sharper than you expect. Order a board with both, scallions and homemade bread, and ask for nothing more. How to climb without being surprised by the descent
The ascent is easy — the engine pulls, it's cold, everything works. Downhill is where people go wrong. Twenty-five serpentines down means you keep your foot on the brake too long, the fluid heats up and the pedal becomes soft just before the hook above the abyss. The solution is as old as the road:brake the engine, engage second or first gear and let the revs run. We elaborated the detailed technique in the guide forSerpentines without fear— read it before heading down.
The old serpentine road Kotor-Njeguši is not for those who rush — it is narrow, the wall is low, and the buses appear at the worst possible moment.
If you are already up there, continue another ten kilometers toNjegoš Mausoleum on Jezerski vrh (1,657 m)inside the Lovćen National Park. The last 461 steps to the top will earn you a plate of back prosciutto. On a clear day, almost a third of Montenegro can be seen from the plateau.
The order of days it works
Leave Kotor early, while the serpentines are empty and the heat has not yet arrived — the same logic as in our story aboutdawn before the heat. You arrive at the top for lunch, sit in the shade, and only in the afternoon do you descend to Cetinje or back to Boka. Prosciutto, by the way, is not eaten at +35 on a terrace without shade — the fat melts and loses its texture; look for a shaded table.
This is a part that naturally continues to the wider story ofAdriatic highway— you turn off the coast, climb into another climate in half an hour, and come back with two vacuumed thighs in the trunk.
