The heat, the DOT number and the pressure that escapes before the road

A five-year-old tire bursts at 130 km/h not because of a hole but because of the date. How to read the condition and pressure before going to sea.

A tire doesn't go flat because you hit something. It bursts because the inside of the tire was already dead, and the heat of the asphalt and 130 km/h only delivered the bill. In mid-August, when the road surface in Greece or along the Adriatic highway passes60 °C, stepping on the rubber reaches temperatures that cut the rubber like scissors on paper that is already criss-crossed with microcracks. That shooting is not announced. That's why the tire is checked before the trip, not after the first rest stop.

This is not a text about how to change a tire. This is a write-up on why the correct pressure in summer is not the same as in winter, how to read how old your tire really is, and the three things you check on a cold tire in the morning before you pack your trunk and get behind the wheel.

Why the pressure escapes as soon as the asphalt boils

The air in the tire behaves according to a non-negotiable law: as the temperature rises, so does the pressure. The rule of thumb we use on the road is yesevery 10 °C change in temperature changes the pressure by approximately 0.1 bar. That sounds small until you add up the numbers. A tire inflated in the morning at 20 °C, after an hour of driving on asphalt at 55 °C, with friction and deformation that heats it up, easily gets0.3 to 0.5 barmore than the morning value.

That's why the pressurealways measure on a cold tire— in the morning, before driving, or after at least three hours of rest. If you measure on a warm tire at the pump after 50 km, the number is falsely high and if you then drop it to the factory value, you will be driving undersized in the afternoon. An undersized tire overheats, bulges, and is the one that bursts.

For a long trip loaded with luggage and passengers, the factory plate (located on the driver's door or in the fuel cap) gives two columns: normal load and full load. For the sea with four people and a full trunk you go tovalue for full load, usually0.2 to 0.3 bar morethan normal. It is not a recommendation but a protection against overheating and sidewall bottle. How to read how old a tire is

Tires don't die from kilometers but from years. Rubber is a compound in which bonds are broken down under the influence of UV radiation, ozone and temperature cycles — a process the profession callsrubber oxidation. The result is tiny cracks in the sidewall and bottom of the tread channel, and rubber that is hard, glassy, ​​and prone to sudden bursts. A tire with a deep tread that has been sitting for five years can be more dangerous than a worn one that has been driven constantly.

Age you read fromDOT markingson the side wall. The last four digits are the week and year of manufacture:2319 means the 23rd week of 2019. If you can't find those numbers, you're probably looking at the inside of the tire — turn the wheel. The rule we use without exception: tire older thansix yearsis examined seriously, and older thantenchanges regardless of how good the pattern looks.

Three things you feel and look at

First,pattern depth. It is the legal minimum1.6 mm, but on a wet road it flies, when a sudden storm turns the hot asphalt into a slide, below3 mmaquaplaning starts earlier than you think. Measuring money: the edge of the coin in the channel, or wear indicators (TWI) — bumps on the bottom of the channel. When the pattern aligns with them, the tire is ready.

Second,side wall cracks. Swipe your finger across the side. A network of fine lines means that the mixture has started to break down. It's a sign of a replacement, not a hope that it will last another summer.

thirdly,bulges and deformations. A sidewall bubble means that the inner layer has ruptured after hitting a pothole or curb. Such a tire is not driven — it bursts at the first heavy load. An irregular pattern speaks to geometry: if the outer edges are worn more than the middle, your blood pressure has been chronically low.

A measurement that lasts five minutes and changes the rest

Don't trust the pump at the gas station — half of them are incorrect. Buy your own digital pressure gauge; it costs1,500 to 3,000 dinarsand it's the best money you'll spend before the trip. In the morning, before any driving, measure all four tires and the spare. Compare to factory nameplate, not what "used to be".

If you have a pressure monitoring system (TPMS), know that it only reacts when the pressure drops byabout 25%— so too late to protect you from the slow loss that warms the tire for miles. TPMS is an alarm, not prevention. Prevention is a meter in the hand and five minutes in the driveway.

The heat does not only attack the tires. Hidden gems: what services fail to tell you

A few practical details that hardly anyone says out loud.Nitrogen instead of airis sold as magic — the truth is more modest: nitrogen varies less with temperature and passes through the tire more slowly, so it holds pressure longer. Not bad for a long haul, but regular air at the right value works just as well if you check it.

Other:the spare tire in the trunk floor gets old without anyone looking at it. When you need it, it is often eight years old and at 1.5 bar. Check it on the same day as the others.

Third, and the most important for older cars and youngtimers: a tire produced ten years ago that "only traveled 20,000 km" is a marketing trap on the used tire market. Date, not mileage. The same principle we apply when choosingused roadster— the number on paper says less than the condition of the material in hand.

And finally, what has been confirmed to us on every long trip: the tire cools down by driving, not by standing still. If you feel the car "swim" or hear a change in sound, pull over in the shade and let the tires cool for at least an hour before measuring or topping up anything. Never douse a warm tire with cold water — thermal shock is another way to kill it.
