Brakes in summer: why the fluid boils before the pads

On the third serpentine descent, the pedal goes to the floor, and the brakes are working. The culprit is a three-year-old liquid.

The shoe, which half an hour earlier was hard as rock, suddenly sinks to the floor, and the car does not slow down. There is no smoke, no smell, the disc is intact, the tiles have material — and you are flying towards the bend in Zlatibor with a full car and a roof box. It's not a malfunction. It's a physics you made yourself by not modifyingbrake fluidtwo years, so it boiled over on a long descent.

Summer is the worst season for brakes for a simple reason: it combines three loads into one. Outside temperature over 35 °C, a long line of serpentines that heats the disc to embers, and a full car that weighs 300-400 kg more than when you tested the brakes on an empty ring road. A system that works perfectly in the city then shows where it is really weak.

Brake fluid drinks water and that's the whole problem

Brake fluid is not a fluid that is consumed — it isit spoils. Standard DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 fluids are glycol based andhygroscopic: they literally absorb moisture from the air, through the rubber hoses and tank, during their entire life in the car. The new DOT 4 fluid boils on the eye230 °C(dry boiling point). After two years, when it absorbs about 3-4% of water, that point falls to150-160 °C(wet boiling point). That's a drop of almost 80 degrees without a single visible sign.

Why it's deadly on the downhill: the disc and caliper on a long descent easily exceed 200 °C, the heat transfers to the liquid, the water in it turns to vapor — and vapor is compressible, unlike liquid. When you press the pedal, you are squeezing the vapor bubble instead of pushing the piston. That's itvapor lock: the pedal goes to the floor, the brakes do not work. A few seconds later, when it cools down, everything works like nothing happened — which is the most dangerous thing, because it makes you think it was a fad.

That's why the rule is simple and non-negotiable:the fluid is changed every two years, regardless of mileage. A liquid moisture meter (a cheap tool at any service station) will show the percentage of water — over 3% change immediately. This is a service of 3,000-5,000 dinars that literally saves a life, and people skip it for years.

Fade is not the same as vapor lock — and tiles have their limits

There is another overheating, the one that happens to the tiles themselves.Brake fadeis the loss of friction when the friction material of the pad exceeds its operating temperature. Cheap organic tiles start to lose their bite after about250-300 °C, while high-quality semi-metallic or ceramic ones last up to500 °C. The feeling is different from vapor lock: the pedal remains hard, but the car simply decelerates less, with a characteristic hot smell of burnt resin.

The solution to both problems is not to press harder, butengine braking. On a long descent, put the transmission in a lower gear (third, even second) and let the engine hold the speed. The plates and disc have a mechanical limit. The disc is engravedminimum thickness(e.g. 22 mm on a new 25 mm disk) — under it, it does not dissipate heat and cracks. The tile below3 mmfriction material is changed before the trip, not after. Pedal pulsation when braking means a warped disc (most often from the sudden cooling of a hot disc passing through a puddle) and it only gets worse in the summer.

What is checked before 1400 km, and what is checked on the road itself

Preparing the brakes goes along with the rest of the car's summer preparation — we wrote about tires, air conditioning and pressures separately in the textHeat, asphalt and 1400 km. Before departure: fluid level at the maximum (if it falls by itself — leakage, urgent service), fluid age under two years, plates over 3 mm, disk without edge ridge and without pulsation. Hoses must not be cracked or inflated under pressure.

On the road, the rule for downhill is: slow downbeforethan you enter a series of serpentines, not in it. If you feel the pedal softening or the smell becoming pungent, stop at the first safe place and let the brakes cool down15-20 minutes— never pour water on a hot disc and never keep your foot on the pedal while standing (this locally heats one spot on the disc and warps it). This is especially true on sections likeAdriatic highways, where the serpentines descend towards the sea for kilometers without a flat break.

Hidden Gems: tidbits only someone who has burned out the brakes knows

First: when you change the fluid, you ask the service to do it for youcomplete pumping through all four jawsdevice under pressure, not just filling the tank. The old fluid sits deepest in the calipers, where it's hottest — and that's exactly the place the amateur replacement skips.

Second: if you regularly drive up the mountain with a full car, switch to liquidDOT 5.1instead of the factory DOT 4. It's the same chemical base (they mix without a problem), but the wet boiling point is about 25 degrees higher — a clear bang for the buck.

Third: a new, smooth plate and a new disk must be installedstalking(bed-in) — a dozen moderate braking from 60 to 20 km/h without a complete stop, to evenly transfer the friction layer to the disc. If you skip it and go all out straight away, you'll get throbbing and spotting in the first week.

Fourth, the most important:rear brakes wear slower but jam more often. A corroded rear caliper piston holds the pad against the disc and heats it to idle — the car pulls to the side and wastes fuel, and you think everything's fine because the pedal works. Hand on the rear wheel after 100 km of driving: if it is much warmer than the other side, you have a stuck caliper.
