MX-5 and rust on the doorstep: where it breaks down and what it costs

The cheapest entry into a true roadster comes with one price that doesn't show in the ad — a sill that's rotting on the inside while the sheet metal looks healthy on the outside.

The magnet on the door sill of the MX-5 tells the truth that the seller won't. You run it along the bottom edge, and where it falls—where it doesn't stick, where it's swallowed by the gouge and varnish over the hole—is the real price of that car. Not the mileage on the clock, not the number of owners in the book. Prague. At the first (NA, 1989–1997) and other generations (NB, 1998–2005), rust on the sills and internal reinforcements is the difference between a roadster you drive for ten years and a piece of metal that falls off at the first technical.

We love this car without reservation. Few things for the money it's asking offer so much pure joy — 50:50 mass distribution, a sunroof that opens with one hand from a traffic light, an engine that sings to the red field without drama. But romance ends where tin begins. Here's a guide on how to buy it so it doesn't disappoint.

Why the threshold, and why from the inside

The MX-5 does not have a classic chassis — the load-bearing element is a self-supporting body, and the sills (rocker panel) are the backbone of that construction. The problem is not the outer sheet metal. The problem is the inner, closed profile of the threshold, into which water enters through blocked drains under the canvas roof and through drainage channels behind the seats. Water collects, stagnates, and the threshold rotsfrom the inside out. By the time the bubble bursts onto the visible sheet, it's too late inside.

The codeNAgeneration the situation is more serious simply because of age — the youngest specimen is close to 30 years old. The codeNBfactory protection is slightly better, but the story about drains is the same. Key place: rubber plugs (drain plug) in the floor, behind the seats, which become clogged with leaves and dirt. When he locks the water, the carpet is wet, and under the carpet are the floor and the inside of the threshold.

What exactly to look for during the examination

  • Magnet testalong the entire sill, especially on the rear third near the B-pillar. Non-adherent = plastic/slot over hole.
  • Lift up the carpetdriver and passenger. Moisture, rust around the seat screws, the smell of mold — these are all red flags.
  • Check the drainsbehind the seat: with a finger or wire. If it's clogged with the current owner, it's been clogged for years.
  • Rear fenders and wheel arch— another point of deterioration, more difficult to repair than the threshold.
  • Front pot and exhaust manifoldon the NA model they are often the first hole in the system, but that's cheap compared to sheet metal.

If you have ever looked at youngtimer, the logic is the same as the codeAlfa Romeo Spider 916orBMW E30 convertible— with open cars, water always finds its way, and tin pays the bill.

Mechanics that rarely lie, and a few places that do

The good news: the engines are almost indestructible.1.6(B6, 90–115 hp) and1.8(BP, 130–146 hp) are chained up, belt down — on these engines it changestoothed belt at 90,000 km or 8 years, as soon as possible. If the seller does not know when it was changed, calculate the cost immediately. A broken belt on these engines doesn't bend the valves as catastrophically as some, but don't invite luck.

Weak points to be heard and felt:

Few things for the money it's asking offer so much pure joy — 50:50 mass distribution, a sunroof that opens with one hand from a traffic light, an engine that sings to the red field without drama.

  • Second speed synchro— scratches when cold when the gearbox is tired. Drive while it's cold.
  • Rear differential and axle shafts— buzzing at constant speed.
  • Leaking crankshaft rear oil sealon older specimens.
  • Roof electronics NB— the rear window heater on the glass roof sprays; canvas roof without glass is more durable.

All this is a trifle next to the threshold. The engine and gearbox are found and installed; a rotted sill means jacking up the body, cutting it and welding it — a job of several hundred euros per side if done right.

Real prices in the Balkans in 2024/2025

The market has become stratified. Under a thousand euros are projects and wrecks with hidden rust. A healthy, drivable example with clean sills starts significantly higher. Here's what it looks like from our ad tracking and what we saw live:

ConditionA generationReal price (EUR)
A project with rust on the sillsON 1.6800–1,500
Driven, minor work, sills OKON 1.82,500–4,000
Preserved, serviced, no rustNote 1.84,500–7,000
Collector / Mk1 import from a dry climateNA/NB7,000–12,000+

The message is simple:pay more for healthy sheet metal, not low mileage. An engine with 200,000 km on a healthy body is a better car than an engine with 90,000 km on rotting sills. The mileage is fixed by the service; rust is repaired with money that rarely makes sense to invest.

Hidden Gems: trivia that only someone who has ridden it knows

Imported specimens fromof Japan(Eunos Roadster, the same car under the local name) often have dramatically less rust because they haven't seen road salt — but make sure it hasn't been parked by the sea.Greek and Spanishthe import is similar: dry, but watch out for the sun that destroys the fabric roof and fittings.

A detail that betrays a caring owner:plastic roof hinge coverand drain condition. Whoever cleaned the drains looked after the car. Another trick — look for itdifferential with Torsenlimited slippage (higher packages); it changes the cornering character from fun to real. And one more thing: the NA with pop-up headlights has a charm that the NB doesn't have, but the headlight motors weaken over time — make sure they both pop up at the same time.

When you buy it healthy, only the best part remains. Put the roof down, find a two-lane road without trucks and let it do what it was designed to do. Our mapfive parts of the Adriatic for a lowered roofis correct for this type of car, and before leaving, take a look attire pressure and age— on a light roadster, you can at least feel it. Questions & answers

short and to the point
Where does Mazda MX-5 NA and NB rust?
The critical point is the inner sill, which is rotting from the inside out due to clogged water drains behind the seats. The second place is the rear wheel arches and the floor under the carpet.
How much does a good used MX-5 really cost in the Balkans?
A driven NA 1.8 with clean sills goes for EUR 2,500–4,000, and a preserved NB 1.8 without rust costs EUR 4,500–7,000. Below 1,500 EUR are almost always projects with hidden rust.
Does a broken timing belt on an MX-5 destroy the engine?
The belt is changed every 90,000 km or every 8 years. If the seller doesn't know when it was changed, count that cost right away when buying and don't take any chances.
