A hundred kilometers of ridge, cool air rising off the Danube, and not a single truck on the road — if you're out before seven.
At half past six in the morning, the asphalt on Iriški Venac carries a temperature you won't feel again until September. The rubber doesn't soften, your hands don't slip on the wheel, and the air spilling over the folded windshield smells of damp linden and dew rising off the vineyards below the road. This is the only window in the day when Fruška Gora drives the way it's meant to — before the thermometer climbs past 30 and before the weekend convoy of day-trippers floods the ridge.
The point of a morning convertible run isn't speed. The point is having the road to yourself, the shade of a beech tree while the sun is still low and slanting, and air temperature ten degrees cooler than what awaits you in the valley by noon. If you drive an open car, this is the one discipline where the Balkans beat Tuscany outright.
Why before seven, not whenever you wake up
The Fruška Gora ridge is narrow and winding — the main road from Sremski Karlovci through Stražilovo to Iriški Venac and onward toward Andrevlje is a string of medium-speed bends without a single straight longer than a few hundred meters. That's perfect for a roadster and a disaster by Sunday noon, when every third corner hides a cyclist, a van loaded with rakija, or a family scouting a spot for a barbecue.
Before seven, none of that exists. The air is dense and cool, the engine breathes better than it will all day, and through the folded roof you can hear the tires gripping asphalt that's still faintly damp. If you're driving something light and rear-wheel-drive — and for the morning ridge there's no better choice than a well-kept Mazda MX-5 — those ninety minutes are worth more than an entire weekend at the coast.
A route that makes sense, not just mileage
Start from Sremski Karlovci, where the Danube is still wrapped in mist, and climb toward Stražilovo. From there onto the ridge, then west toward Iriški Venac — that's the heart of the route, sitting around 490 meters above sea level, with the TV tower as your landmark. Continue toward Andrevlje and drop down toward Vrdnik before the sun climbs high enough to burn the back of your neck.

One warning from our own road notes: dew lingers on the ridge in the beech-tree shade long after sunrise. On three or four bends just below Iriški Venac, the asphalt stays wet until around eight, even while the rest of the road has dried out. Don't push it there.
