Mountain escape from the heat: asphalt that climbs into the shade

While the city is boiling at 38, at 1000 meters the wind is blowing that smells like spruce. A route that climbs from hell to shade in two hours' drive.

The thermometer in the car shows 39 as you leave Bajina Bašta, the air conditioner is running at half power because the engine is already pulling uphill. Then the serpentines start towards Kaluđerski Bari, the window goes down on the third hinge, and somewhere around 850 meters above sea level, the first wave of non-burning air hits. It's not air conditioning. It's physics.

The rule is brutally simple:the temperature drops by about 6.5 °C for every 1000 meters of ascent. Grad at 200 meters and Tara at 1050 meters are not the same day — that's a difference of five to six degrees before you factor in the shadow of the pines and the wind from the plateau. That's why the mountain route in summer is not an excursion but a strategy.

Why do you climb the serpentines and not the tunnel

The ascent from the Drina valley to the Tara plateau is a classic section that rewards the engine and fines the brakes. FromIt is about 14 km from Bajine Bašte to Kaludjerski Baran almost continuous climb with a series of bends where you rarely go beyond third gear. This is where the car heats up — keep an eye on the coolant temperature gauge, as older engines can easily go over 100°C on a long climb in the heat.

If you are not sure that the car is ready for such a load, read first what we wrote aboutprepare the car for the heat and long climbs— an overheated engine in a serpentine is no place for improvisation. On the downhill back, use engine braking, in second or third gear, so that the discs do not go into the glassy coating after ten turns.

The reward comes on the plateau: flat, cool tarmac through a spruce forest, where mid-day temperatures hover at a pleasant 24-26 °C while the valley burns. UnlikeFruška Gora sections, here the altitude works for you all day, not just at dawn.

Viewpoints that are cold even when hell is below

The real point of the route is the edges of the plateau.Spa rockit hangs about 250 meters above Perucački jezera, at about 1050 meters above sea level, and there is almost always a wind blowing from the Drina canyon — you stand sweaty, and in a minute you need a long sleeve. The approach is gravel for the last few kilometers, drive slowly and not in the rain.

Less well-known, but worth a detour, is the view point towards the lake on the Mitrovec side — a plateau where the air is a shade fresher because it is cooled by the lake below. The key is rhythm: ride the climb in the morning while the asphalt is cool, and leave the viewpoints for midday when there is nothing to do below because of the heat.

Where to lower the temperature and yourself

On the plateau around Kaludjerski Bar and Mitrovec, there are taverns where you can eat lamb and trout from the nearby ponds — look for places along the road, the ones with a terrace facing the forest, not the parking lot. It goes with a cold beer or homemade apple juice; heavy wine and a mountain climb back do not go together. If you plan longer, sleeping at 1000 meters means you need a blanket at night even in August.

Questions & answers

short and to the point
How much colder is it on the mountain than in the city in summer?
The temperature drops by about 6.5 °C for every 1000 meters of altitude. The Tara plateau at 1050 m is five to six degrees cooler than the valley in the summer, plus the wind at the viewpoints makes it feel another 3-4 °C.
Does the car overheat on a mountain climb in the heat?
On a long climb of 14 km, the engine easily exceeds 100 °C, especially the older ones. It monitors the coolant gauge and, if it rises, turns off the air conditioning and reduces the speed before it goes into the red.
When is the best time to drive a mountain route in summer?
Climb in the morning while the asphalt is cold and there is little traffic, and leave the viewpoints for noon (12-3 p.m.) when the heat is unbearable down in the valley and still 25 °C on the plateau.
