Five wine regions in Serbia where grapes are trampled in the harvest
September is the only month when you enter the Serbian cellar without knocking — the door is open because the cauldron is full and your hands are dirty with must.
September is the only month when you enter the Serbian wine cellar almost without knocking — the door is wide open because the host's hands are dirty with must and there is no time for formalities. These five regions are where harvesting physically takes place these days, with the exact mileage from Belgrade and what you really see when it arrives.
Oplenac, Šumadija — royal vineyards about 20 minutes from Topola
Vineyards planted at the behest of King Peter I at the beginning of the 20th century are still in operation today, and the family wineryAleksandrovicin the village of Vinca near Topola is the bearer of the entire Oplenac wine road. During the harvest, open cellar days are organized with the trampling of grapes in the old-fashioned way — bare feet in a wooden trough. Belgrade is about 80 km away, the journey takes an hour and a half.
Fruška Gora, Vojvodina — Irig and cellars in the hill
Irig is the center of the Fruška gora vineyards, with a wineryKovacevicas the most famous address for visitors — a large underground basement cut into the slope, where the temperature remains stable all year round without air conditioning. In September, tastings of young must are organized there directly from the tanks, before the fermentation begins. From Novi Sad, it's about a 40-minute drive.
Rajačke i rogljevačke pimnice, Negotinska krajina
This is not one winery but an entire village of cellars — hundreds of stonepimnicafrom the 19th century, buried in the slope above the vineyards in the villages of Rajac and Rogljevo, near Negotin in the far east of Serbia. Each family has its own, and in the harvest, cauldrons and presses are seen in the courtyard in front, not inside. Negotin is about 240 km from Belgrade, count the three and a half hours drive.
Vrsac, Banat — the oldest vineyards in the country
The Vršac mountains have been carrying vineyards since Roman times and today they are among the highest vineyards in the plain of Vojvodina, at about 300 meters above sea level. This is where the most cultivatedBagrina, an indigenous variety that you rarely see on the label anywhere else. It is about 90 km to Vršac from Belgrade, an hour and a half by highway and then by local road.

Aleksandrovac Parish — Prokupac and Tamjanika at 300 m above sea level
This area around Aleksandrovac, southwest of Kruševac, is known for its indigenous varietiesprocurerandincenseAt the end of September, the Parish Harvest is traditionally held here, and the wine route leads through a dozen villages with family cellars where the must is tasted straight from the barrel. The same procurator is the forerunner of the crow about which we wrote in the text oncrow and kratošija— different variety, but the same logic of autochthonous grapes that may not look like imported ones.
In each of these five places, what you drink with stepping on grapes is justmust or wider, freshly squeezed juice koji još nije odlučio da li će postati vino ili nešto jače. Ako se ne popije, isti sok za koji dan-dva završava u kazanu — logika koju smo objasnili u tekstu o grappi i komovici.
