Four bottles and a home bar open every weekend
You don't need a shelf of twenty bottles. You need four real ones — and the knowledge of what to make of them when the bell rings.
Nine out of ten home bars die the same way: you buy an exotic liquor because it was on sale, you open it once, and it sits for two years until the level evaporates by itself. The bar that really works is the Uzi, not the cheese. Four bottles, correctly selected, give you an aperitif, a classic cocktail and something for after dinner — without any nonsense on the shelf.
The logic is simple:each bottle must do at least three jobs. If only one works, it's a hobby, not a bar.
Four bottles that carry everything else
London Dry Gin (40–47% alc.)is the backbone. Dry, piney in the foreground, it works on its own with tonic and as a base for martinis and negroni. Get something with pure juniper, not the flowery, soapy varieties — those get boring quickly.
Red vermouth (rosso, 15–18% alc.)is the most underrated bottle in every apartment. Sweet, bitter-spicy, cold from the refrigerator, it works as an aperitif alone on ice with orange peel, and without it there is no negroni or manhattan. How he behaves himself, we explained in the text of Frvermouth as an aperitif— and that's the first pizza you should learn to serve properly.
Campari-type bitter liqueur (20–28% alc.)turns the two bottles above into a whole repertoire. Negroni, americano, gin and bitters with soda — all from one red bottle. Bitterness is what most people hate on the first sip and love on the third.
Tequila blanco 100% agave (38–40% alc.)is the fourth and is deliberately not whiskey. Blanco makes a paloma, a margarita and a shot after dinner, and it's excellent because it brings a completely different aroma than the three bottles above. We went through what "100% agave" means on the label and why the NOM number is not marketinga guide to tequila and mezcal.

What is really made of it
Here's the point — four bottles, and at least seven serious pizzas without buying anything other than tonic, soda, and one citrus:
| Pizza | Composition | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Negroni | Gin + vermouth + Campari | 1 : 1 : 1 |
| Americano | Campari + vermouth + soda | 1 : 1 : supplement |
| Dry Martini | Gin + a drop of vermouth | 6 : 1 |
| Gin & Tonic | Gin + tonic | 1 : 3 |
| Paloma | Tequila + grapefruit soda + salt | 1 : 3 |
| Margarita | Tequila + lime + sugar | 2 : 1 : 1 |
| Vermouth on ice | Rosso + orange peel | just cold |
Paloma and four more cocktails with tequila, with exact measures, we keep inspecial textif tequila becomes your favorite bottle — and it will.
Little things that separate the bar from the bottles on the shelf
Ice is an ingredient, not a decoration. Big gamblers melt more slowly and don't dilute negronis in two minutes. Vermouth goes in the refrigerator after opening and is drunk within4–6 weeks— it's not whiskey, it oxidizes like wine. Citrus is always fresh; bottled lime juice is a betrayal that is felt immediately.
If you want it to be homemade, feel free to replace the fourth bottle with a good onecauldron plum— after dinner does the same job as tequila, only with our accent.
That's all. Four bottles, one citrus, tonic and soda. Everything above that is that other bar—the one where the bottles just collect dust.
Questions & answers
short and to the point- What are the basic bottles for the home bar?
- London Dry gin, red vermouth, Campari-type bitter liqueur and tequila blanco 100% agave. From those four bottles, you can make negroni, americano, martini, gin & tonic, paloma and margarita without a single additional bottle.
- How long does vermouth last after opening?
- Vermouth is a flavored wine with 15-18% alcohol and oxidizes — keep it in the refrigerator and consume it within 4-6 weeks. After that, it loses its freshness and starts to be unpleasantly bitter.
- What's the ratio for negronis?
- A classic negroni is 1:1:1 — equal parts gin, red vermouth and Campari. Knead over a large ice cube for about 20 seconds and garnish with orange peel.
